Poker - Playing at your Perfect Limit

A lot of talk in the online poker world revolves around limits, with forums full of questions from players asking if they should be moving up, how much bankroll they need, can they beat the games at the same rate etc? Although often too much attention is paid to limits by some, they are nonetheless an important part of your play and therefore deserve some thought.

Choosing your limit should be based on a calculation of your financial situation, your poker skill, and how averse to risk you are. Whether you are starting with a bankroll of pennies or thousands a new player should always start at the low limits. This is where you will learn the basic fundamentals of the game, whilst avoiding the professionals lurking at the higher limits looking to take your cash.

Once you believe your poker skills are up to scratch then it is time to look to moving up limits where your experience will be developed and the potential winnings will be more. When moving up limits you should try not to choose a limit that makes you scared to play, else you are sure to lose as your judgement will be swayed by the sums of money on the table. You should also be sure that your bankroll is sufficient for the limit you are aiming for – too many people decide to ‘have a go’ at a higher limit with a shortage of funds only to be hit by the swings and be wiped out.

Although the vast majority of poker players will be aiming to continually progress in the poker career, advancing up the limits as they go, it is important that you are always prepared to drop down limits if the need arises. A hit on the bankroll which needs replenishing, a feeling of being lesser skilled than the other players, or simply being scared of the sums of cash being played for are all legitimate reasons for dropping down a level. Don’t forget you can always move back up at a later date when you feel ready, but to stay at a level which is too high puts your entire bankroll at risk with the potential of disastrous consequences.
